PC Gamer Presents: Dry Gulch

Prologue:
It began with the heat--it hit Dry Gulch like a sledge hammer,
making it impossible for the prospectors to work. Animals from
the surrounding areas began to crack from the hot weather,
wandering into town and attacking anyone and anything. Thefts
began to occur in the mines and folks would go missing. One
minute they were there, and in the next they were gone.

And then the strangers showed up.

Sure they looked like everyone else, but there was something about
them that wasn't quite right. And then old Sheriff Hardrod stumbled
across their leader one night and heard his plans. Something about
messing with dimensions in an effort to ambush a "Gravy Trader",
whoever that was. The sheriff put up wanted posters and rounded up
the best shooters in town. But it was already too late. The
strangers had bigger guns, guns that could never exist in the real
world.

Dry Gulch never had a chance.

Story:
After escaping the Island Paradise, Coconut Monkey found himself
adrift in the ocean, his sole copy of Gravy Trader resting to the
rear of his vessel. His supplies running low he was about to give
up all hope when a blue light appeared in the water ahead of him.
The light doubled in size within seconds, enveloping CM and his
tiny craft. With a roar the light collapsed upon itself, taking CM
with it.

Seconds later CM reappeared, intact, him and his craft floating
down a canyon stream. Residual blue light rippled through the craft
and before he could react, the boat vanished, plunging CM into the
fast moving stream. His only chance is to locate his ship and hope
that whatever power brought him to this hell hole will take him
back. That is, if he can get past Pierre and his minions...

* Do NOT use 'movement type' cheat codes in this map! You will mess up
the sequencing of events if you do.

*** HOW TO RUN "Dry Gulch" map ***

*Registered Ver 3.14 [or higher] of Quake 2 is required!*

*You ladies should play as 'male' player in this level because you are
playing 'as' Coconut Monkey, then you will hear his special sounds and
voice.

As per the following diagram, create a directory in 'Quake2' parallel
to 'baseq2' named 'coconut2' and extract all files in coconut2.zip
directly into it.

*** DO NOT extract into the 'baseq2' directory! ***

C:\QUAKE2
   |
   +--- BASEQ2
   | |
   | +--- MAPS
   |
   +--- COCONUT2-+-pak0.pak
   | +-gamex86.dll
		 +-drygulch.cfg
		 +-DryGulch0.bat
		 +-DryGulch1.bat
		 +-DryGulch2.bat
		 +-DryGulch3.bat
		 +-coconut2.txt

Then to run, open up the coconut2 directory with Win95 File Explorer
and double-click the .bat file that corresponds to the skill level
you want to play in.
ie; DryGulch2.bat = skill 2

IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS?
99.9 % of the mail to me concerning problems with running pak files is
because the gamer never followed the instruction EXACTLY! If you do so,
and your version of Q2 is working fine, then this pak will work for
you.
If you have a prob of a more technical nature then the best may be to
write Andrew Eglington as he is the expert on technical matters. But
please consult all your Q2 document files first.

GENERAL NOTES ON PLAYING DRY GULCH:

CLIMBING- Some things 'other' than ladders are also climbable.

SECRETS- You will probably need to find at least some of the 'many'
secrets to get all items you will need to complete the maps. None of
the secrets are hard to find if you keep your eyes open. Explore
each area well before moving on.

GAMEFLOW- Because of the wide open town and outdoor areas it is
possible to fastrack through certain areas of the map. But if you do
so you will just be cheating yourself and missing interesting things,
and also will probably not have enough ammo/items/weapons to complete
the last scenarios of the map.

MESSAGES- Please read the story before playing..otherwise the game may
not make sense. There are also 'Daily Telegraph' papers lying about
that will fill you in with the goings on of the Dry Gulch area, and
some messages contain clues that can help you.

LEVEL CHANGES- The change to level 2 will probably surprise you. But you
can turn around and return to level one if you aren't finished there yet.
Later on in level 2, once you find the boat's red key-card, events will
transpire that will prevent you from returning to level 1 by the route
you entered.

END OF GAME- Even with the red key you will not be able to activate the
time-machine boat until you have killed Pierre. Then just get into the
front of the boats' cabin and the game will end.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
SPOILER WARNING! Read no further if you don't want hints!

-there is a shotgun on the bow of the boat [time-machine] at the start.
You must grab it and the shells in the boat before the boat dissapears.
But there is a soldier in the mine that also drops a shotgun if you
miss that one.

-it may be best to save your ammo and just lead the mutants in the cave
back and trick them into jumping into the river [where level starts]

-to ride the minecart you must shoot it's wheel chock and open the
bars across the tracks then climb into the cart and it will go. The
lever that opens the bars is on the upper, mine entrance side of the
bars. Once the minecar jumps the broken area of the bridge it will hit
a box of TNT at the back of the tunnel...so you must jump backwards off
the minecart before that happens. Save game before riding the cart as
you only get one chance. Also make sure there are no monster or their
gibs on the tracks before riding the cart or you may get jolted off.

-the dentists door starts locked as he is gone for lunch. He returns if
you inspect the front of the bank vault door or head down the cave to
'West Gulch'.

-you should find the red key before leaving the second map, but if you
don't you can go back, although it is a long way:] The red key is in the
banks vault which is accessed from the dentist's rooms above by blowing
his TNT stock. Then to progress, take the cave near dentist's door with
the sign that says "West Gulch".

-behind the little shack in West Gulch is an outhouse. Shoot the seat
out and leap into the underground stream....it will take you back to
level 1 for the final showdown with Wild Pierre Hicock! But gather all
the ammo and items you can first.
