1 - INTRODUCTION
        1.1 What is Black Ops?
Black Ops is a real-time small arms combat simulator,
designed to be playable as well as realistic.

        1.2 Installation
Make a subdirectory in your Quake directory called
'BlackOps'. Unzip the contents of the zip file into it.
Copy the .exe files into your Quake directory.

        1.3 Running Black Ops
Run whatever flavour of the Black Ops engine you prefer
(ie Win/GL) with the parameter '-game BlackOps' eg.
                'win_ops -game BlackOps'
Once in the game, experienced players can use the console,
or the main menu can be accessed via the escape key.

        1.4 Upgrading Black Ops
By the time you download this version, later versions may
be available. If so, there may be a patch to upgrade your
version to the most recent version. Check the Black Ops
                website at

                www.planetquake.com/commandhq/mods.asp

        1.5 Legalese
All original code, models, skins, sounds and concepts
                (c) copyright The Lieutenant 1999/2000. All other code,
models, skins, sounds and concepts are intellectual
                property of their respective authors.
The QC source code to Black Ops is included in the download.
It is freeware and you can use it for any non-commerical
purpose without my permission, though I would appreciate
credit and a link to my website (planetquake.com/commandhq)

                Relating to the FrikBot:

Frika-C includes his own legalese to be distributed with his
FrikBot modification which is incorporated into Black Ops.
                Here it is:

FrikBot, and all functions and code writen by Ryan "Frika C"
Smith are copyrighted (C) 1999. You are allowed to use and
distribute this mod as long as this text file remains intact
and the mod is provided free of charge. You *are* allowed to
modify and incorporate this bot into your own mods, as long
as adequate credit is given and the end result of your
modifications is also provided free of charge. If you have
questions or comments regarding the bot, the code, or just
the universe in general, please write me at
                frika-c@earthling.net.

The text file referred to is included in this documentation
as 'frikbot.txt'. The legalese here is an identical copy of
                that from the 'frikbot.txt' file.

                Disclaimer:

Black Ops is provided on an 'as is' basis. There is no
warranty or guarantee associated with this product. If it
doesn't work, or eats your hard disk, then tough. It's not
my fault. Having said that I will do my level best to make
Black Ops a stable and playable game that works fine.

2 - PLAYING THE GAME
        2.1 Single Player
The goal of Black Ops is to complete the level by walking
through the exit gate. This usually means collecting keys,
pushing buttons and shooting bad guys until the gate is
                found.
At the end of the level you get a score based on the
number of monsters killed and secrets found. Bonuses will
be awarded on a number of criteria.
Start a Single Player game from the main menu simply by
selecting 'Single Player' then 'New Game'. You will be
presented with the standard Quake start map to pick the
required difficulty and episode. You will also encounter a
menu overlaid on the centre of the screen. Press a number to
choose the weapon you want to start out with. You will then
receive it and a small amount of ammunition for it. Note that
you also start with 5 grenades.

        2.2 Co-Operative
Black Ops incorporates full Co-Op support. The goal of a Co-op
game is the same as a Single Player game, and the rules are
broadly similar. The only real difference is that when you
die, you can 'respawn', that is, start back at the beginning
of the level, without the level restarting.
Scoring is again in force, but at the end of the level your
score is based on an additional criterion: how many times
                you died.
To play a Co-op game, you will need at the bare minimum two
computers, two copies of Quake, a serial cable and a friend.
All but one of these articles are available at any large
computer retail outlet. Alternatively, you can play over an
IPX network, for LAN play, TCP/IP for internet play or over
                a modem.
Start a new game by selecting 'Multiplayer' from the main
menu. One computer should 'start a new game'. Select the
flavour of connection you have (ie IPX), configure the game
and begin. Once the game is started, all the other computers
should select 'multiplayer / join a game', select the
                appropriate options and begin.

        2.3 Deathmatch Free For All
Deathmatch is a completely different style of play. The aim
is to kill other players on the server as many times as
possible before the level ends. Weapons, ammunition and
health respawn periodically to keep you topped up. Deathmatch
is very fast paced, brutal action for Black Ops.
And to enliven your Deathmatch experience, Black Ops
incorporates 'bots' - computer controlled opponents that act
like players (except players tend not to jump in the lava as
often). To add a bot into the game, any player can type
'addbot' at the console (press tilde - the key to the left of
'1' - to bring down the console) and a bot will join the game,
provided that the maxplayers setting is high enough. To remove
a bot type 'rembot' at the console.

        2.4 Deathmatch Teamplay
Teamplay is the same as standard Free For All deathmatch,
with one difference - you play as teams. Teams are denoted by
the lower colours chosen by the various players. Bots can
play in teamplay - use 'addbot' to add a bot onto your own
team, or 'addteambot' to add a bot onto the bot-only team.

        2.5 List of commands
Black Ops has several extended commands that vastly enhance
gameplay beyond that of the original Quake. To use them, you
can just type them in at the console, or bind them to a key.
To bind a command to a key, type 'bind x "command"' at the
console, where x is the key to be bound and "command" is the
command to be bound to it. Note that for keys such as enter,
x should be ENTER or SPACE or CTRL, etc.
Many of these commands can be bound via the Options/Customize
                Keys menu.

                CROUCH +crouch
This command allows you to hunker down, to avoid
enemy fire, stay hidden or collect items. With
certain weapons, crouching will 'aim' your weapon
by bringing up a down-the-barrel view that can be
                        used for targeting purposes.

                ADD A BOT addbot
Adds a bot into the current deathmatch game.

                ADD A BOT addteambot
Adds a bot onto the bot-only team in teamplay.

                REMOVE A BOT rembot
Removes a bot from the current deathmatch game.

                BOT CAM botcam
Turns on the bot-camera - it allows you to see
through the eyes of each of the bots currently in the
game in turn. Repeatedly selecting this command will
cycle through the available bots. When all the bots
have been cycled through, you will respawn.

CYCLE WEAPON impulse 10 or impulse 63
This will cycle through your available weapons,
highest to lowest, omitting the inventory.

                ZOOM IN impulse 50
If you are crouching and you have the sniper rifle
selected, this will cause the display to zoom in
slightly. Press it repeatedly for extreme
                        magnification.

                ZOOM OUT impulse 51
Zooms the sniper scope back out.

                RELOAD impulse 52
When you start running low on ammo in your gun,
you'll need to reload. This will take the appropriate
amount of ammo out of your ammo inventory and put it
into the gun. Any spare ammo in the gun will be
                        returned to the ammo inventory.
This command is also used to cycle through secondary
options on the inventory (see weapons appendix).

                TOGGLE WEAPON impulse 64
This command will reselect your current weapon, for
mode cycling purposes. It is also the third knife
                        attack (see weapons appendix).

GAMMA SET impulse 70 to impulse 80
If you find that your screen is too dim, you can
change your default gamma setting to brighten it.
Default gamma is 1, and is represented by impulse 80.
Maximum gamma (pure white screen) is represented by
impulse 70. To set a gamma value in between, type an
impulse equivalent to the gamma fraction you want.
                        ie impulse 79 = gamma 0.9, impulse 77 = gamma 0.7.
                FRAG GRENADE impulse 81
This command will throw a single frag grenade at half
power then change back to your previous weapon. Frag
grenades can also be thrown from the inventory.
                FLASHBANG impulse 82
The same as the command above, but throws a
                        flashbang grenade.
                CHOOSE WEAPON impulse 83
In deathmatch you may get bored of the weapon you
initially chose. No problem! When you're dead, just
use this command and then when you respawn the
weapons menu will again be available.
                DOMINATOR impulse 84
This is a test weapon available to all players all
of the time. It is suggested that you bind this
impulse to the '9' key. See the weapons appendix for
                        further details.
                TMS-LRLS impulse 85
Selects the second test weapon - the rocket launcher.
                ESCORT COMMANDS impulse 86
Brings up a menu to select the behaviour of your
wingmen. You can also add wingmen into the game
                        with this command.

CHANGE CD TRACK impulse 100 to impulse 125
IF you don't like the CD track currently being
played, you can change it using this command.
                        impulse 101 = track 1, impulse 125 = track 25.
Unfortunately, there is no support for CDs with
                        more than 25 tracks.

3 - APPENDIX: WEAPONS

        3.1 Inventory
The inventory is where all the miscellaneous items you have
acquired appear. It has many parts - to cycle through them,
just select (1) repeatedly until you reach the correct one.

                GRENADES
You carry three types of grenades: frag, flashbang and gas.
To cycle amongst the different types available, use your
reload command. To fire, press and hold the attack button
until the desired power level is reached, then release.
Aiming grenades can be tricky at first but with a bit of
                practice, it's easy.

                MULTIGUN
The multigun has three functions - use reload to cycle
amongst them. Whilst one function is in use, the others are
                inaccessible.
The first is grapnel gun, which fires a grapple in a straight
line that will attach to any flat surface. Once attached to
the grapple, you can press and hold your jump key to climb up
the rope, or press and hold crouch to descend. Press both
jump and crouch together to break the chain and reel the
                grapple back in.
The next function is the remote activator, which fires
similarly to the grapple gun, but anything the head touches
is 'activated' ie fire at a door and it will open, fire at a
button and it will depress. The remote activator has a
                limited range.
The final function is C-4. Firing will deploy a charge that
sticks like a grappling hook to any surface. After a five
second countdown, the C4 explodes, destroying any nearby
objects such as doors, switches or false walls.

                KNIFE
The Black Operative's last chance. The knife has three
different attacks. The first is a sweeping cut activated by
the fire key, the second is a quick stab, using the reload
key, and the third is an overhead lunge which uses the toggle
                weapon command (impulse 64).

                AMMO / WEAPONS / KEYS
These items can be selected in turn. Pressing reload will
cycle through the various items you have available. ie ammo
cycles bullets / shells / rifle rounds / grenades.

        3.2 Pistol
Colt Desert Eagle .45cal. Huge & heavy pistol clocking in at
4.5lbs. Holds nine rounds, and fires semiautomatically.
Reselecting the pistol will toggle a flashlight on and off,
                handy in darker areas.

        3.3 SMG
IMI Uzi 9mm submachinegun. Lightweight and reliable, a
favourite of security forces worldwide. The clip holds 40
rounds that can be fired at a rate of 10 per second.
Reselecting the uzi will add a silencer, so as to not attract
attention. Crouching with the silencer selected aims the
                weapon.

        3.4 Sawnoff
Sawn-off version of an Ithaca 8G double-barrelled shotgun.
Reselecting toggles between firing one or both barrels at
the same time. Not particularly useful against well armoured
                targets.

        3.5 Pump-action
Janesevic Security Group's most popular weapon, the 854M
is sturdy and reliable, and fairly accurate to a long range.
A pump-action configuration holds six shells, which can be
fired two per second. Again, the shotgun shells are not
                terribly good against armour.

        3.6 Sniper rifle
Hicks Jaybrook Customized rifle in 7.62mm NATO calibre.
Features include a 9x scope (reselect or crouch to toggle),
                laser pin-dot, a five-shot integral magasine and a supremely
                accurate bolt action.

        3.7 Assault rifle
Colt M-16 5.56mm. Standard-issue American military rifle that
loads 30-shot clips. Gas powered action fires 10 shots / sec.
Crouching aims. Reselect to activate the M-203 40mm grenade
                launcher.

        3.8 Chaingun
Atlanta Corporation's ultra-heavy weapon, the Harbinger. Fed
from a chain belt, and really guzzles that ammo - fires a
tremendous 20 rps. Also hideously inaccurate at longer range.

        3.9 Assault rifle 2
Pyx Dominator 5mmR. 20-shot automatic weapon firing 8rps.
Also has underslung 4-shot pump action shotgun - reselect to
                activate.

4 - APPENDIX: MONSTERS
        4.1 Dog
A rottweiler, to be precise. Nasty up close but a real wimp
                at range.

        4.2 Soldier
Packs an uzi and a Flak jacket. En masse they are a danger,
but no problem in ones or twos.

        4.3 Crossbow Chick
Quieter than a sniper, faster than a soldier, these girls
                know how to quarrel. Sorry.

        4.4 Tough Guy
Some tough guys wield a chainsaw and throw grenades, others
carry twin uzis. Either way, they're bad news.

        4.5 Officer
Tougher than grunts, better armoured than tough guys, and
all-round better equipped, officers are a mean bunch. Some
carry shotguns, but the real hard-asses pack M-16s with
                grenade launchers.

        4.6 Rocket Trooper
Looks like an officer but unfortunately for you packs a
                single-shot rocket launcher.

        4.7 Sniper
These guys hide up in the rafters with their sniper rifles
and pick off anyone dumb enough to enter their killing
fields. Fortunately they are given away by their muzzle-
flashes, and a quick grenade will soon put them to sleep.

        4.8 Turret
An officer seated in a swivel turret armed with a double
barrelled machine gun that can tear strips out of anything.

        4.9 Lost Soul
Horriblly disfigured floating corpses with eyes that bore
                into you... literally.

        4.10 Hell Knight
The average knight's bigger brother. Armed with an even
bigger sword and an awesome repertoire of magic.

        4.11 Fiend
A mean beast at the best of times, these things are full of
teeth and claws and, just like Hellraiser, will tear your
world - and your face - apart.

        4.12 Shambler Child
Mummy shambler's little progeny, they sqeak ridiculously
before frying you with a downsized version of a lightning
attack, or scrabble at you with their developing claws.

        4.13 Bone Fiend
Mister Fiend's big brother, bone fiends are evil distilled
into a bleached white body with lots of nasty sharp bits.

        4.14 Shambler
Big momma - bigger than big, bigger than a really big big
thing. Will zap you with lightning and, if you still refuse
to die, rip you to shreds with enormous spiky fists.

6 - CREDITS

        --THANKS TO--
iD of course, especially Messrs Carmack and Romero, for what was
not so much a brilliant game as a brilliant game *engine*.

All the authors of the utilities used to make this mod. The ones I
can remember are: Ben Morris & Valve for Worldcraft, Cable Hicks for
AdQuEdit, Zink the Dink for EnDoomer, and Rene Post for the abysmal
but necessary QMe. Olivier Montanuy for the jaw-droppingly fantastic
WinTex. Sorry to all those who I can't remember or didn't get the
        names of!

All the authors of patches that inspired this one, notably Hitman
for Special Forces Quake, the driving force behind Black Ops to make
        a *good* SpecFor sim.

All the authors of patches that I've blatantly ripped stuff from.
Again, Hitman is a culprit: for the soldier model & green skin, the
Officer green skin, the sniper model, the tough guy skin and probably
some other stuff. Frika-C for his lava-loving FrikBots, and also for
Waypoint Studio. Lando (whatever happened to him anyway?) for the
crossbow model and a great concept in the form of MechaQuake. The
makers of The Fifth Element patch, whoever they are or were, for the
arrow model, and a great example of how *not* to code. The guy who
put the bettersounds.zip onto file-planet for the uzi and chaingun
sounds. Es'Istol Asaki (formerly Lord Asaki) for the footstep sounds
ripped from FeaR DM. Special thanks to Klaus Breuer for the source
for the 'twenty grenades' patch, that basically taught me how to
code. Also thanks to the creator of the simply fantastic chaingun
        model, Christopher Bolin.

Thanks to Jared Ballou and all the Admins at MDQNet, up until you
stopped hosting me, everyone who left MDQNet, everyone who came
back and everyone that stayed to the bitter end. Also to the people
at Inside3D. Shambler at Teamshambler for superlative level reviews.
The Harbinger of Fish because he's got such a daft name.

Thanks to all the authors of the tutorials incorporated herein, for
services above and beyond the call of duty to the Quake community.
You know who you are, but for everyone else's sake: Frika-C again,
Koolio, Muff, Ender, and of course, Coffee. On top of that, Xoltan,
for coming through when no-one else did.

Ice for the idea, model and code for the *original* sniper rifle.

Adam, Ice and Duncan for keeping me going at it.

All the artists in my CD collection for providing some superb
'ambient sounds' during the creation of this patch. They number in
the hundreds, but special thanks to Silver Sun and James Broad,
Garbage, Republica, Blink-182 and the Manic Street Preachers.

And thanks to everyone who's ever bothered to download Black Ops, or
        IW2 as it was.
