Abusing this thread for some "what could you be working on" invitation. :)

I have open-sourced the https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/ part of Quaddicted, so if you know PHP (hopefully better than me), you are invited to collaborate: https://github.com/SpiritQuaddicted/Quaddicted-reviews (warning, it is a mess).

I've not be working on anything of late, due to my laptop being only just alive. It happily chugs along surfing or using office for a 3-4 hours without closing itself down, but play a video for more than a minute, or, heaven forbid, a game for more than 10-30 seconds and it dies, refusing to come back on for 10+mins.
This is obviously curtailing any modding at all - it won't compile maps, it would compile code, but then I couldn't run the game to test it.
Repairs have brought temporary relief, but have just got to the point of throwing good money after bad. I'm aiming to get a new desktop pc at some point, but cash is decidedly short at the moment, so Xmas is as soon as I could hope for.
All a bit of a downer, really. :(

Id start checking the gfx card fans for dust, sounds like an overheating problem to me.
Check the cpu cooler also while you're at it :) Pc's need regular cleaning cause they suck up dust like vacum cleaners on kaffeine.

All done, multiple times. It's been cleaned more than any computer I've ever had. Parts replaced, fixed and upgraded. Only delays the inevitable, and for a shorter and shorter time period each time. Good money after bad now.

Ouch sorry to hear that :S well it might be dying but one thing that can tell you for sure is if you take a look at the capacitors near the CPU.
If its not a custom build machine with one of the more expensive mainboards they usually use cheap capacitors instead of hard caps and they tend to dry out causing the top of the cap to bulge.
So if the top starts to have a dome shape on some of them then its time to get a new mainboard cause in time they will explode (no joke). Can save a good buck reusing parts that are still ok like the CPU / ram and just buy a new mainboard (preferably one with good quality hard caps) might cost a bit more but i have mainboards from 10 years ago with hard caps and they still run like oil :). Just make sure that you get
a mainboard you can use with the CPU/ram from the old one.

I'm finally biting the bullet and following some Blender tutorials. I think once I get past the initial complexity of it all, I should be reasonably ok making static models, maybe even a simple weapons model like a baseball/cricket bat (haven't decided which yet). The big problems down the road will be animating and texturing, oh, and scale! Anyway pigeon steps...
By the way I'm aiming to make things like toilets and basins and various detail items for inside houses/buildings, as well as the aforementioned bat. I'm also seriously considering replacing all the brush lampposts with models. Can't ever think I'll be able to make animated, living-things type models though

For beginners only wishing to work on static meshes I would strongly recommend using WIngs3D instead: http://www.wings3d.com/
You can set the camera controls to be Blender like to have an easier time switching back an forth at a later point in time (it trains you muscle memory the right way).

Blender is a great programm and has made good advances in usability lately, but its modelling tools are still a bit of a weak point and the shere complexity of all those advanced features (maily for feature film production) does not make it a good beginners tool.

Wings3D on the other hand is very easy to learn and has all the featured needed for making static models with ease.

Hello,

I know it is nothing special, but I just finished to add the Hexen monster: Afrit into Quake and wanted to mention it.
I used John "Psychikon" Jensen´s wonderful gpl model for it.
Using the Darkplaces engine I also made some fire particle effects for him.
If you are interested you can download him at quakeone.com

Kind regards,
Seven
