![]() By Neil Manke 8/1/98 ![]() 6.88 MB zip "...It began with the heat...and then the strangers showed up...sure they looked like everyone else, but there was something about them that wasn't quite right...Dry Gulch never had a chance." -Excerpt from Dry Gulch readme text. Dry Gulch is another in the long line of Manke extravaganzas that goes above and beyond the scope of most levels produced for quake. Each one of these mini productions are packed with new sounds, skins, code, models all wrapped up nice and tight in a finely crafted and memorable Manke map package. Neil's alliance with PC Gamer has not diluted his considerable prowess either. In fact it seems to have ensured a continuation of his levels appearing on the net. With Dry Gulch you find yourself again playing the part of Coconut Monkey picking up where you left off in "Paradise Lost". Your foes this time are a strange combination of sombrero wearing Gunners, acme clad Berserkers and dolled up garter belt Iron Maiden floozies. And all are just as deadly as their regular Strogg counterparts. Gameplay is top notch featuring explosions which affect your surroundings, a roller coaster mine cart ride, and a wildwest-saloon-hotel-window smashing-shootout-bank-robbing-free-for all. Dry Gulch also contains a sequence which startled me more than anything else has since Quake1. In order to save the surprise for you let me just say that you'll know it when you encounter it. Some really nice aspects of this level were the translucent "fun to shatter" window textures, soaring and screeching vultures, blazing hot sun outdoor vistas and bathroom humor level segue ways. Thanks
Neil and let's hope PC Gamer knows a good thing when they've got it. Keep
em' coming!
