Subject: SM40 Contest Results

The SM40 contest was something I started so that the SM40 speedchainmap would
actually get finished. (This was the speedchainmap that Lunaran was setup to
do, but was unable to finish.) I got the inspiration for it when I remembered
someone on IRC saying he thought it would be interesting to see how different
people would make a map from the same map pieces. From there, it was just a
short leap to realize that a contest would be needed to motivate people to each
make a map, and that SM40 was the ideal source of maps to use.

I myself was making a map, but unfortunately it was lost in a hard drive crash,
and there wasn't sufficient time to restart it. Consequently, there were only
two entries for the contest; one from Mike Woodham, and one from Zwiffle.

I would like to thank the contest entrants for participating, the original SM40
map authors for their maps, and Vondur for donating a signed copy of Silent
Storm: Sentinels.

The Evil Verdict

It's rather hard for me to decide which map wins. Because despite all
the flaws I met in both of the maps I enjoyed playing them. I don't wanna
make an enemy for myself ;) But if to look unbiassed, then Mike's map
is better by some points. To tell briefly:

It has more stylish textureset (even some texes were out of place like
floors on the walls) [Zwiffle's texset was okay too, but i think that
lun's base is unmixable with that blurry daikatana texes, they destroy
the feel :(

It has more detailed lighting

It has stronger quake feel and atmoshere (this one might be more personal
than unbiassed, but wtf, if u don't agree go find another judge ;)

It has funnier gameplay and there's better ammo balance (maybe bacause
i've found secrets, but still, they weren't that hard to find)

It had seven secrets! (I'm secret maniac, sorry)

(and note for you, I didn't say it had fog as a plus dammit! ;)

So i think MIKE WINS!
But I still love Zwiffle and his effort!!!!!!!
