I’d always wondered about that. I’m certainly no expert myself. I’ve read some of the technical documents on the NES, and am fascinated by stuff like that (I am a computer engineer by trade), but I’m not overly familiar with the architecture, and haven’t dived into the world of ROM hacking. I want to, though! Maybe I’ll find some time eventually. It’s awesome that you’ve dug into it at least to some degree!

The fact that it’s mono-directional is certainly hard-coded into the game, and I suspect that with the size of the map already straining the limits of the cartridge’s memory it would have been pretty hard for them to do it any other way. I’m not an expert on NES hardware or assembly code, though – far from it. I merely dabbled for a short while.
