Some day will you write an article about games that do so?

It wasn’t anything the game itself did wrong though. Before I ever played Super Metroid I spoiled the hell out of it by reading about it online. So I actually didn’t pick up on a lot of the game’s narrative techniques because I knew what was supposed to be happening.

In fact, it wasn’t until I played Cave Story that I finally got it. I’m not sure what the moratorium on spoilers is for a 10 year old (wait, seriously?) indie game, but the short version is it used a lot of the same storytelling techniques, even though it did have dialogue. In particular there is a character sacrifice moment that really got me. Later it dawned on me that it was the same as the baby Metroid and suddenly everything clicked. The next time I played Super Metroid I got it and I loved it completely.

Reading this anatomy brought back all of those memories for me.

Really, the sequence of events that begin as you enter the halls of desiccated enemies is brilliant and the perfect bookend to this game.

And now someone needs to make fanart of the Super Metroid using the energy station as a water fountain.
