Sadly, it was a Russian pirate cartridge which stopped functioning after I’d finished the game. Reading this series really makes me want to play it again, and I’m seriously considering buying a Wii-U now…

Looking back at them now I can see how they’re really just tutorials, but back then I was very much into the story. Through Adam you can really see the X-infestation growing out of hand in a way that would have been hard to do with just gameplay. There’s also a real sense of the SA-X stalking you (altough you only actually encounter it 3 or 4 times) that almost turns MF in a sort of horrorgame. For me it’s closer to the Alien-movie than any of the other games.

I remember this particular example of the frozen parasites feeling very tense back in the day. Adam warns you of a dangerous new enemy that you should avoid at all costs, and moments later you’re being chased by 5 or 6 of those blue globs. It freaked me out way more than if they would have just appeared without any explanation.

This and Nightmare were the worst. On the plus side, button-mashing combat is much more tolerable on Wii U’s Game Pad!
