More Offense
This section is basically an overview of everything covered in all the other chapters.
And some other important stuff. Areas concerning MEGA-TF are marked in yellow. They are under the areas which they are different from.
Otherwise everything applies to MEGA as well.
Let's begin.
The scout's role in TF is primarily to capture the enemy flag. Don't let the name scout
fool you. He probably could be used as a "scout" but there are no TF maps, I
know of, that require to be scouted. Most maps are fairly small. And everyone pretty knows
where everything is. So a "scout" is not needed. A scout could be used for
scouting in a sense where he penetrates the enemy base and informs his teammates of what
is going on. But that is something almost any of the other classes can do as well. It
would even be better in some cases, to use a soldier for this instead. He would have a
better chance of surviving.
So because of this, the scout's role changes. The scout has 50 green armor, and 75 health.
One well placed rocket and he's toast. The scout's main weapon is the nail gun. It's a
weak weapon. The super shotgun is a better weapon in my book. The advantage to the scout
is his speed. He is by far the fastest class of all.
The scout is different in MEGA. His speed has been reduced almost
to that of a Pyro, Engineer etc. Instead his biggest advantage now is the Jetpack. In my
opinion, it benefits over the speed greatly in many cases. There are still sometimes the
speed would have been better. But overall, the Jetpack gives the scout far greater power
than the speed did.
The Jetpack should be used very wisely. It runs on cells. It's best to use it only when
escaping with the flag if at all possible.
The biggest threat by far to the scout is sentry guns. It is almost the only entity in
the game that can actually hold a constant aim on the scout, thus killing him. Other
entities are snipers and so on...
There is no way a scout can single-handedly kill a level 3 sentry gun by himself. The best
thing to do in a case where a sentry blocks your path, is to avoid it at all costs. If you
cannot do this. If it stands in a way that you absolutely must pass, then there is little
left for you to do.
I suggest you first try and get the cooperation of your teammates and have them go kill
it. If they seem unable to. I suggest you change classes and go do it yourself. My class
of choice for this task is the Soldier.
The best and possibly the only way a scout can keep alive, is to avoid the enemy
completely. Don't even let the enemy see you at all. Stealth is the key. Hide in shadows.
Peek in to a room before running through it. Hide in shadows if an enemy is in the area
and there is chance that you might be seen.
The reason for all this hiding incase you are wondering, is because the scout is a very
weak class. He can be killed easily. It's better to wait and move cautiously, then to be
killed 20 times before finally grabbing the flag, then to be killed again just as you get
it.
A few things I haven't talked about:
Conc-Jumping This is basically the same as gren-jumping except you do it with a conc-grenade. It's fairly simple to do. I've seen some sites out there that recommend learning this. They give various examples of where to use it. I don't recommend using it at all. Even if there are numerous places you can use it to get up to. You will be unable to play properly, if not at all, making you a very easy target. I do make an exception however, if you find somewhere where you can use it without attracting any attention. AND you will be able to stand in a shadow or something, once you get up there, for the conc to wear off. Then it's ok to do it. Otherwise I recommend getting there the old fashioned way. Remember, you're a scout, and you have the speed. In MEGA you shouldn't use your conc-jump at all. You have a Jetpack and
don't need it. |
Slide-Shafting This is using the wall to break your fall when jumping down great heights. You press yourself against the wall as you move down, sliding. This breaks your fall and you don't get injured. The main thing is that you will not get hurt once you reach the ground. It is not reliable though. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I recommend always to try it though. You have very little health as it is. Why not try and preserve it. |
MEGA-TF's "Lay" Every class has the new ability to "lay". Which is lying on the ground. The bad thing about this is that it is impossible to change the code in Quake to make it so that the player view goes down as well. What this means is, a player can stand behind a blockade that reaches up to his knees or so. Something he can see over. If he then lays, his model (which you see) appears to lay down on the ground. You won't be able to see him if he is behind something. But as the player's view is impossible to change, it looks like he is still standing in his view. This can be very dangerous for you. So be careful at all times. Don't let down your guard just because an area looks empty. Snipers are very much usually in this state. In time you will learn all the common areas where people lay. Once you learn this places, then you can start predicting. Hide from the view of this area as you approach. When you get close, toss a grenade up there. (I say up because most places people lay on are above ground.) |
