Bard's guide to a better Spy
If you're a nancy who prefers to drink martini's -
shaken not stirred instead of good manly beer then the spy is for you. The spy is of
limited use in clan games against a good clan as the defenders are often very aware of who
is where. On public servers the spy kicks butt. Against bad clans it is an excellent way
of cause confusion and panic in the enemy's ranks. As soon as they start shooting and
stripping armour and health off each other you have achieved a worthy goal. The spy comes
equipped with a shotgun, a nailgun, a tranquiliser gun, a big knife, gas grenades and
normal grenades.
General tips
- Do not change color before you get to the enemy
base!!!!! this gives enemy time to notice you are the wrong color on the showscores
screen. Instead change to a class that moves around the same speed (pyro, medic, engineer,
demoman or sniper) and move into the enemy base. Once there then change color.
- DO NOT MOVE AROUND WHEN FEIGNING.... rapdancing
corpses are obvious. Too many newbies end up with a soldier standing on you so you can't
get up and then just axe you to death.
- Shooting or stabbing removes your disguise. It's much
better to use grenades.
Offense tips
- Sentry killing is an excellent job for a spy. Two
grenades will take out a sentry and leave you with your disguise intact.
- The gas grenades are excellent for causing confusion
and are an effective prelude to a flag taking or a major offense, especially when it's the
second line of defense that is gassed. The enemy won't know if those explosions are real
explosions, whether that grenade that just landed at their feet is real or that their flag
is actually captured.
- Often assassinating a defender doesn't do too much
unless it is very well timed. For example sneaking into an enemy base you destroy a sentry
gun, feign in a position to give you a good field of view (dressed as a demoman for
example). When the Engineer comes back and is in the process of rebuild his sentry you
run up and stab him in the back :). With any luck he will have respawned in the
"gobi desert" (an area miles from anywhere useful - attributed to
'[DraGoN]BustaGonad') and the enemy will be without a sentry for a long period.
- Tranquiliser attacking a defending heavy just before
your offense hit assists immensely.
- After infiltrating an enemy base and taking out any
sentryguns the spy should work on the defense in a guerilla warfare style. Hit the deep
defense with tranqs and run. If your team are taking out the front line of defense nab the
flag and race out of there to meet them halfway.
- Another good trick is to be chased into the enemy
base with one of your own team mates taking shots at you, just ensure you have your knife
out so that it looks like you don't have any ammo. When an enemy 'team mate' comes to the
rescue you sneak past them towards the nearest resupply. This works well when team damage
is on.
Defense tips
The spy makes a reasonable defender. The gas
grenades are useful in flushing out camping attackers and the tranquiliser gun seriously
hampers and enemy's ability to dodge fire and attack effectively. The spy can be a really
annoying defender, especially if he teams up with the enemy offense as a supposed friend,
just to kill them deep in your base.
