This was the first Nehahra map released that wasn’t made by a Nehahra team member. This level, introduced in a well written background story, has you investigating a nuclear waste facility that has been overrun by aliens and rival troops. Iain created a new texture set for this level, which is composed of mostly white textures, giving it almost a Half-Life feel, and of red organic designs, which are very alien and look great.

Architecture is phenomenal. Close attention has been paid to detailing. Pipes run everywhere, industrial styles and organic styles intertwine, many large set pieces await you. One great looking room is completely red organia, with red fog, and ominous red machinery poking out. Another great looking area, is the nuclear dumping grounds, slime with destroyed structures all around you, all in a dense green fog. Very neat stuff. It is obvious that the author put hard work into this. The use of fog makes things very tense, as it sometimes shrouds monsters, making it hard to see where the monsters are attacking from. In contrast, there are the creepily silent halls of the industrial facility, which are very dark, and make you jumpy, as you expect to be attacked around every corner, but rarely are. This is probably one of the most atmospheric maps I’ve ever played.

Layout is also excellent. This has to be one of the largest maps I have ever played. You start out in the darkened halls of the facility, where you must restore power to turn on the lights and power to most places. From there, you make your way to the very top of the facility, into the alien infested quarantine areas, and then back to the beginning. Very nice touches present, such as having to figure out how to destroy machinery, and being able to roam most of the map as soon as you start out, this map is nonlinear, it sometimes even gets confusing because of the sheer magnitude of the level. The 5 secrets included are very exploratory in nature, and the nuclear dumping grounds is one of the best secrets I have ever seen.

Game play is downright creepy. Matching the atmosphere created in the level, it starts out very sparse, with fights few and far between. Then when you reach the alien infested sections, many scrags, vores and vomitus plague you. Mixed in between the aliens are base enemy. Thanks to the Nehahra AI, gameplay is very hard. The vores ability to jump proves to be a very unfair advantage, while scrag strafing proves to be tough, making nailgun kills very hard. But, to compliment this, there is plenty of ammo lying around, as well as health, but you’ll have to backtrack a lot to collect it. It almost gets too hard in the organic sections, as there is not place to run away from the voreballs.

One of the creepiest level I’ve ever played, and it looks great. Play it.
