Here we have a small medieval map, adorned in modified id textures that were used in the Abyss of Pandemonium mission pack. I didn’t feel that the textures looked as good, seeing as they are brighter and less grimy, but it was nice for a change of pace. This map is the first in the ikspq series, and exits to ikspq2.
Architecture, it’s okay overall. The natural rock formations at the beginning look nice, and the outside of the castle looks pretty cool, but other than that there is nothing exciting. The rooms inside, although such details as complex torch holders, and windows have been added, look very plain and uninspiring.
Layout is somewhat better than architecture, but there’s really not much to it. You start out in a canyon, go to a castle and come back. You need two keys to exit, and the gold key somewhat puzzled me, as it’s positioning does not seem to have any purpose, but it’s the level exit. One thing I did like is how you find a particular button, took me a couple of minutes to find, which probably accounted for a good chunk of the playing time. 2 secrets are present, but they are boring “shoot a different textured section to reveal an alcove” secrets.
Game play is okay, with knights, ogres and scrags being the most prominent. I thought that overall it was very easy, with the only health loss being through knights and ogre grenades. Health and ammo are always in adequate supply, so not to worry. The ending is a bit harder than the rest of the map, but that’s not really saying much.
Although it’s obvious this wasn’t a favorite of mine, it still works well as an introduction to the much higher quality ikspq maps, so play it for that reason.
