After the GLQuake source code was released, the modifications of the original engine started coming in. The 1.13 release was one of the first. As the name suggests, this is an “unofficial” release. It features most of the video chipset compatibility of its predecessor, along with the same library of improvements to Quake’s original “software-only” mode. However, some nifty new effects have been incorporated into this release as well. Among them:
- GL “fog” effects; both the depth and color balance of the fog are adjustable by the user
- Adjustable “bumpmapping” effects to non-liquid surfaces
- Number of animation frames for all models doubled, for more lifelike movement
Although this is the “unofficial” GLQuake release, it is highly recommended over the first, since all of the features of the first GLQuake are in here, plus a lot of great new features that add a new dimension to your Quake experience.
Pros :
- Broad hardware compatibility
- Extremely stable
- Adds several significant engine improvements over the original release
Cons :
- Seemingly unable to store the fog and bumpmapping preferences set by the user, forcing readjustment almost every time the game is started
- Having new effects all turned on at once can cause a major performance hit, especially enemy animations
- Bumpmapping effect is distracting at average distance; looks quite silly at close range
- Adjusting fog color has no effect on lighting
- Zoop
