Originally developed by id’s John Carmack as an experiment of the portability of the Quake engine, it unintentionally became the standard-bearer for 3D hardware acceleration on PC computers, and single-handedly launched the now-defunct 3Dfx.
The version of GLQuake reviewed here is the final “official” release. It features broad compatibility with most OpenGL-compatible video cards, as well as a special 3Dfx “mini-GL” driver for enhanced performance with Voodoo chipsets. The most common GLQuake features are supported in this release, including:
- Transparent water support (levels have to be recompiled with updated VIS data first)
- Improved lighting effects
- Certain textures can act as “mirrors”
- Shadows
- Mipmapped textures
It is a solid, stable add-on, and one that is recommended to start with when choosing a GLQuake solution.
Pros:
- Broad hardware compatibility
- Extremely stable
- Very small footprint
- Support for the minimum GLQuake features
Cons:
- Showing its age
- Lacks many of the eye candy features of some other GlQuake ports
- Water “warping” effect causes visible polygon tearing
- Zoop
