You are traveling down a very long open elevator surrounded by pentagrams, large rings, and four Makron. A little disheartening to say the least. Armed with only your blaster you can don nothing but wait.
What comes next is a teleportation ride through 7 new levels of pure Hell. With textures from Quake3 and Mark Shan, ambient music by the authors techno band, Lemonhearth Club, and some borrowed code from the mission pack, The Reckoning, you will come face to face with some of the most atmospheric levels seen in Quake2.
The level designs aren’t top notch as most just provide large arena rooms with hallways to connect them. For the most part all are very linear in style but the texturing and lighting provides a mood that will grab any Quake fans attention.
Sadly for this conversion, we don’t rate on mood alone. Once you start to explore the first real level you will find yourself amongst an army of Strogg guards. At first the adrenaline really starts pumping as you begin making your way through the piles of gibs that lead you to the next army. Then the problem happens, you begin to get bored. Strogg after Strogg after Strogg after Strogg after…..get my point. It seems like the author didn’t even take time to position them in any strategic way. They are just lined up one after the other.
At this point I thought it was time to just do the run and duck method to try and make it through the rest of the levels. Next thing I know I’m locked in an arena sized room where I can’t leave until every Strogg is eliminated. No longer are they the easy guards either. Now it’s gladiators and medics. At this point it became too much. To progress any further I had to turn God mode on.
Afterwards each level still provided me with great visuals but the gameplay was terrible. Ammo was never a problem but health was needed much more. To this reviewers dismay, 666 left a very bad taste in my mouth.
Still, I don’t want you to shy away from this without seeing the level design and who knows, you might enjoy strafing in a circle for hours.
