Bounty hunters be alert
I gave it a lot of time and thoughts, and here you go (it is obviously what seems most tasty to me):
- Multi-format cross-platform model converter: 50 $ (in progress)
- FOSS cross-platform Ogg Vorbis soundtrack support in the engine. Make it support any filenames (eg have a track called asd.ogg and “cd” “asd” in worldspawn) and console command “cd play xx” compatible. Provide a patch/diff.: 100 $
- A tool that takes a directory of images including subdirectories, converts them to .mip and puts them into a texture wad. It shall rename filenames that are incompatible with Quake and keep track of those renamings (so the source images can be used as replacement textures for the ones in the wad, a simple log is enough). Support at least TGA as source format. Windows is alright, cross-platform would get you a little extra: 25 $ (in progress)
- Fix the multi-threading-VIS auto-saving bug: 25 $
- .lit support to aguirRe’s tools: 25 $
- hint/skip/detail support to aguirRe’s tools: 25 $
- Origin brush support to aguirRe’s tools: 25 $
If you want to start working on a task, make sure to first contact me (spirit at this domain). I will then mark it as “in progress”. The bounties on aguirRe’s map tools need a bit polishing. I will need to talk to gb about his Linux ports. Because if possible those new features should work cross-platform.
Some of the money will be used for some little surprises. I planned to do this before (for) christmas but had too much stress.
I will have a low cash per-item bounty for secret guides later. Just waiting for a Darkplaces bug to be fixed some day.
I really liked some of the other ideas but many were too controversial for me and/or of no great use for many people. Especially the “new monster” idea is great but can you imagine it working out well?
Quaddicted is being sponsored, let’s sponsor you in return
Thanks to a sponsorship from pokerlistings.com (see below) Quaddicted.com is now able to monetarily fund some projects. I would have declined but I had an idea.
My idea is to fund bounties to support the Quake community. How about that excruciating task no-one wants to do?
I’ve pondered about possible Quaddicted-specific projects for quite a while now and so far I like this idea the best:
Ask people to do 100% (at least secrets, monsters ain’t that important) playthrough demos on the better custom maps (the “Excellent” ones first). Video capture with DP and post to video sites, archive.org and Let’s Play.
This would have benefits for everyone: The players would get a secrets guide, the community would get some exposure and also Quaddicted would get some much needed exposure. Thoughts on this: Also require screenshots and/or a short text description? Timetable of the secrets (at least Youtube supports linking with timecodes)? Provide a DP config and commandline to capture. $1 each?
What do you think? Any projects you would like to see funded with $1-100? It has to be as open/free as possible and benefit many. Let’s collect ideas. I have up to $500 to give away, ain’t that great?
Merging the speedmaps into the sp map database?
Having the speedmap session zip files in the same directory as the main singleplayer archive zips is very annoying. Moving them away would break many links so that is no option. Adding them all to the main listing (and the Quake Injector) is not perfect because there were deathmatch map sessions. It would also mean a lot of new work to do as they would need descriptions (thankfully negke wrote short ones for most of them), screenshots et cetera.
So, I need your thoughts. Shall I go on a link breaking rampage and move them into their own directory? Or should I merge them into the main archive and have some DM maps in there for good measure?
Happy Birthmonth Quaddicted
This months marks the 5th anniversary of my Quake site. Before Quaddicted was born, there was “Spirit of 85′s Quake Weblog”. I published it on the 22th October 2004. Archive.org had a hard time mirroring the stupid host I used, but here is how it looked like. I will try to find some backup and put it online some day. Even though the site was named differently and covered much more news (and had no archives) I consider the Quakeblog to be “the” site already. Quaddicted was just the new name and address at some point later.
Looking through some backups I cannot believe how much time I wasted for this site. Waste in the sense of actually doing things in the most complicated way. Anyone who helped converting the database files in 2005(?) knows… Getting all the positive feedback is a great reward though and I hope the people who helped with this site do feel rewarded too. Definitely the nicest feeling comes from people discovering their old maps in the archive.
Anyways, I wanted to make something bigger but my personal life got in the way (in a very very good way, hooray!). So let’s celebrate the 5th anniversary of this Quake Archive with a month of fanart creation. Whatever you make, mail (spirit at this domain) me about it and I will try to do regular posts. If it is older, previously released stuff or not your own creation please say so.
Here is my “first I was serious but then I had to finish it quickly” attempt of some plain old rhyming.
Late at night,
when QuakeWorld sleeps
through dark and light
the Ranger creeps.Searching for prey,
fearless and mean,
hiding in shadows
the Fiend is being unseen. If fate or if bad luck
couples these two
you better get out there
or you will be screwed.
By one or the other…
Or how about some stupid Haiku?
Shamblers headbanging
Fiends galloping against walls
Quake monsters on dope
Those two are silly, sorry. Some really moody dark Quake poetry would be ace. I cannot draw, otherwise I would. Or how about some good old comics? Maybe you sometimes like playing amateur blacksmith like me? Or do you build paperwork? How about Quakeopoly (by metlslime). Whatever your Quake mind can think of, send it in.
Methods of Destruction (non-)update
Re: Methods of Destruction – The alternate Quake soundtrack
Sascha Dikiciyan / Sonic Mayhem keeps ignoring my attempts to get in contact. Since we all know that internet petitions work (yeah, right) I made the new poll about it. Well, maybe it will actually work and change his mind. :]
By the way, it turns out that the Quake – Arcade Tournament Edition (follow-up post coming some day) was using the Methods of Destruction soundtrack.
The previous poll’s (“Do you own a legit copy of Quake?”) results were quite devastating. One third of the participants only have a “copied copy” of Quake. Does this also mean that all of them never played with or even heard the original soundtrack?
